research method

today I had a difficult day when supervising students in the 500 hours projects. while students do not have formal research methods education, I ask them to choose a method (I propose action research), to define goals, plan, and evaluation issues. Today, 3 weeks before deliver deadline, one group asks me about which method they have used. the leader student tells "we have been looking on the internet, and setting up an open source project", how can we now evaluate it?

I ask them to make an evaluation plan with alternatives.
Let us see.

university of the arts, london

University of the Arts London has been ranked top of the list of new universities in the 2006 Sunday Times University Guide, published on 10 September.

The views of more than 1000 heads at Britain's leading state and independent secondary schools were sought to judge how well universities were performing in the eyes of those who send thousands of children to college each year.

Heads identified those institutions that, across 30 subject areas, provided the highest quality of teaching. University of the Arts London topped the tables for fashion and art and design and was praised for its 'teaching excellence'. Only Oxford, Cambridge and the London School of Economics had more individual success.

University of the Arts London shares the title of top modern university with Oxford Brookes, while it was ranked in 54 place among all 119 higher education institutions in Britain who were part of the research - a three place rise on its 2005position.

The University was also named the 11th top university in London.

Chi e´o chi è stato il piu´grande ricercatore/scienziato di tutti i tempi?
GALILEO GALILEI

e nell´informatica?
Tutta la comunità degli sviluppatori contribuisce allo sviluppo dell'informatica

the biggest scientist (15 person)

Woman Fermi - ?

the biggest scientist (15 person)

Seeing that the question refers to "biggest researcher" and not to a generic scientist:
1. Fermi
2. Steve Job (but, I'm in dubt with Pascal or Touring)

the biggest scientist (14 person)

1) Risposta impossibile perchè domanda non definita.. Non esistono geni assoluti. Più grande, poi, rispetto a che cosa ? Alla ricerca di base, alla ricerca applicata ? Quale ricerca Fisica, Chimica, Medica, Geologica, Naturalistica, Matematica. Logica/ filosofica per citarne alcune ???
2) Molto probabilmente Alain Tourin, per la cibernetica. Faraday per lo sviluppo delle valvole a logica binaria

I will translate this later.

the biggest scientist (13 person)

My pre-master students

Today I sendt this message to my pre-master students. They are 6 of them. 2 gropus of 2 and 2 students working individually. It is a 500 hours project.
It is too much to expect what I expect?
More about these projects later.
I miss to have some peer to talk about this issues. this blog will help.

Dear students,
it is time to plan a last common meeting. We will meet Tuesday 28th
November 9.15 - 12.00 in room 054.

Please prepare a presentation (that you publish online at our dartos
wiki before meeting start together with your preliminary report.
In the presentation I expect to hear about:

. task definition as it was assigned and final task definition
. state of the art (literature)
. research question(s) and research goal
. practical goal
. research method and research process
. evaluation issues
. other

Agenda
. 9.15 Rune (20 min + 10 feedback)
. 9.45 Th + Maxi (20 min + 10 feedback)

10.15 - 10.30 break

10.30 Nicolas (20 min + feedback)
11.00 Jer + Fran (20 min + feedback)

Brice and Salah are invited to help with feedback´s.
Students are encouraged to exchange documents and to give feedback´s
to each other before the meeting.
Rune, Th, Maxi please invite Øyvind.

Did I forget anything?
Letizia
p.s. we delete our planned meeting at 14.00 Nicolas

the biggest scientist (10 person)

10th person: woman Norwegian social science scientist academic position answers
"The biggest researcher in the world: it must be someone who worked and
influenced both social and technical research, I will say Leonardo da
Vinci, I like the idea of putting the individual at the fore as we see
it in his works (and a sign of early modernity) as well as his technical
innovations."

In computer sience: I do not know, but it might be someone working with
binary (?) numbers? A mathematician of some sort?

the biggest scientist (9 person)

9th person: man Norwegian computer scientist academic education
Galileo (my initial answer was Michel Foucault, but I figured he is a philosopher not a researcher/scientis (do you differentiate between researcher and scientist?)
Richard Hamming (although Dijkstra is a strong contender)

-- interesting -- I do not know how to differentiate between researcher and scientist. this is part of the story that somebody sees Bill Gates as a researcher, I would never thought about him.

Irvin Yalom

I also admire Irvin Yalom, as I recently read The Schopenhauer Cure: A Novel, and LOVES EXECUTIONER & OTHER TALES OF PSYCHOTHERAPY. he is a professor and practitioner (therapist) and writer.

the biggest scientist (8 person)

8th person: woman Italian not computer scientist academic education Archimede, Sergei Brin

the biggest scientist (7 person)

7th person: woman Italian control engineering scientist academic position answers Galileo and Knuth

the biggest scientist (Rita Levi Montalcini)

today I think I will choose Rita Levi Montalcini as the biggest scientist. Because she is a woman, she is almost 100 years old and still engaged in the political debate around science and she is Italian and from Turin. And she has been living abroad as she was forced to.

the biggest scientist (6 person)

6th person: man Norwegian computer scientist academic CS education Newton and Parnas

the biggest scientist (5 person)

5 person: man Italian has worked with computers without computer academic education answers Da Vinci and Bill Gates

the biggest scientist (4 person)

4th person: woman Italian not computer scientist academic education writes that she cannot answer.

the biggest scientist

In my search for an example, today I started to ask people the following 2 questions:
which is the biggest researcher ever existed in the world?
and what about Computer Science?
I have asked twice in Norwegian using the question hvem er den største forsker i verden and og i computer science (CS)?
First person: man Norwegian computer scientist academic position answers Leonardo da Vinci and gives 3 in CS: Alan Kay, Donald E. Knuth, Jean Vanderdonckt?
Second person: man Norwegian computer scientist academic position answers "Leonardo da Vinci" and gives 1 name after thinking a lot and being almost ironic: claes wohlin
I have asked once in Italian, over skype Chi e´ il piu´grande ricercatore del mondo?"
Third person: man Italian computer scientist academic position answers Newton and Parnas
I personally would have answered Galileo Galilei and Tim B. Lee without or let us say before I have made a rational choice of the parameters about how to choose

An example (2)

Another candidate is http://mitpress.mit.edu/catalog/item/default.asp?ttype=2&tid=10137
Herbert A. Simon
He died in 2002. I know so little about him. This is also typical, when one tries to write down, realizes how little one knows.
And that is how I get energy to learn more.

An example

I am trying to find an example to write about. I will of course use and share my experience. But I need to choose a big researcher who is also a software designer, to write about him or her to inspire the readers.
If you ask me to list big software researchers, I have been so many years in Norway, that I first think of Kristen Nygaard, the inventor of the first object oriented language. he died in 2002. He still has his home page up and running at University of Oslo. I am not sure I will write about him. I am even not sure if I should first decide which criteria to look for when looking for the big researcher who is also a software designer. It sounds like a typical research design choice.
